Whiskey Review - Bourbon - Ancient Age · Sat Aug 11, 03:05 AM
Ancient Age is a bottom-shelf bourbon, and frankly, I think it shows. It’s got a strong medicinal sting, and it tastes like a mix of bourbon-light and…something meaner, like that guy over at the bar with bushy eyebrows and a scowl who makes you slightly nervous about leaving before him. It’s not suitable for drinking neat, and I find it a little too rough for a good bourbon & coke. I didn’t dare try mixing up a Manhattan with it.
Here’s the funny thing, though: it makes a great bourbon highball. Toss some ice cubes in a glass, pour in some Ancient Age, and fill it up the rest of the way with ginger ale. It’s like the drink was invented as a way to make Ancient Age drinkable, and it does the job quite well.
I wouldn’t actually buy another bottle on purpose, but if you ever find yourself in possession of some Ancient Age, mix it up with some ginger ale and enjoy. The world is funny, sometimes.
