This week, it’s Year of the Beast, by C-Rayz Walz, an MC on the Def Jux label. I haven’t listened to too many Def Jux artists—Murs, on Felt Vol. 2, and I have El-P as part of Company Flow, on Funcrusher Plus (released on the Rawkus Records label). That may have to change after I manage to stop listening to Year of the Beast…this album rules. It has a wide variety of guest MCs and producers, but manages to pull it all together into a cohesive set of tracks, with some fantastic beats and strong, thoughtful, and trenchant lyrics. You can watch a free video of the song Blackout—I recommend checking it out even if you’re not going to cop the CD…quite sharp.
