In no particular order…

  • Big Trouble—imagine something a lot like a Dave Barry novel somehow miraculously transported to screen without losing any of its insane humor. That is, in fact, exactly what this movie is.
  • Invasion!—no idea where this gem came from, but it is priceless. Lost Skeleton of Cadavra tried, but didn’t quite succeed, to do what this movie does. [IMDB Link]
  • Super Troopers—hilarious. Was well worth seeing in the theater, which I did. The word “shenanigans” cracks me up to this day.
  • Airplane!—I hesitated putting this on here, as I doubt my ability to have any sort of objectivity about it. Maybe it’s not really up to the high standards of True Funnay any more. Hard to say when you know it so well that you can recite large portions of the dialogue from memory. Oh well…here it is anyway!
  • A Fish Called Wanda (and I’m going to sneak Fierce Creatures in here right along with it)—running out of superlatives this far into the list, so suffice it to say, yes, it’s really, really funny. Really.
  • Being There—Peter Sellers demonstrating mastery of understated humor. Quiet little movie that took me by surprise.
  • Dumb and Dumber—Jim Carrey’s best comedy, and he’s had quite a few funny movies.
  • Austin Powers 2: The Spy Who Shagged Me—the best in the series, so far. Mike Myers’ funniest movie by far (though Axe Murderer had its moments). Like all of the movies on this list, it stands up well to repeated viewings.
  • Cannibal! The Musical—the (very) early Troy Parker in what is unarguably the best musical about a cannibal ever made, and arguably the funniest musical ever (well, I wouldn’t argue against that, but someone might). This one will have you humming for days. Also, a couple of years ago, on vacation, we stopped at the Green River in Utah, dragged the whole family down to the banks, and threw a stone in (you have to have seen the movie, of course, for this to mean anything to you…).
  • The Wrong Guy—Probably one of the least-known movies on this list (along with Cannibal! and Invasion), yet one of the funniest of the funny. Dave Foley is a stellar comic actor, and this is his best work.
  • Bad Santa—Best. Santa. Movie. Ever. Billy Bob Thornton does a great job, and I don’t know where they found that kid, but I think he’s got a bright future in comedy if he wants it. This movie had me in tears in the theater.
